Questo personaggio si occupava di mettere in relazione le due parti nella vendita di prodotti agricoli, di terreni, di case, attrezzi, e a volte anche nel combinare matrimoni. Era facile incontrarne al mercato o nelle varie osterie, si riconoscevano perchè avevano sempre un segno distintivo: un vistoso fazzoletto al collo, o una lunga piuma di fagiano sul cappello.
